‘Government alone cannot fix Namibia’ — NNN

Patience Makwele President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibia’s deepening socio-economic challenges cannot be resolved by the government alone, warning that unemployment, poverty and inequality require collective action from citizens, businesses and communities. Speaking at the launch of the book, ‘Building Namibia’s Future: President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s Roadmap to Unity, Prosperity and Transformation’ in Windhoek on Saturday, the Head of State called on Namibians to become active participants in nation-building and development. “Namibia’s future will not be constructed by the government alone. It will require the collective efforts of all citizens. Nation-building demands active participation from people who believe in their country’s future,”…

Uis small miners seek removal of three directors

Renthia Kaimbi A coalition of small miners and community members in Uis has formally petitioned the ministry of industries, mines and energy to remove three directors from the board of the Small Miners of Uis (SMU), alleging that the three women have held their positions since approximately 2010 without meaningful mandate renewal, financial transparency, or proper accountability to the mining communities they were meant to serve. The petition names Helena Itamba, Aune Andreas, and Anna Daniels as the directors whose continued tenure, according to the signatories, has blocked governance reform and left small miners without representation or support. Responding to questions by Dawid Eighub of the Landless People’s Movement, Sankwasa said the first assessment was done during the 2021/2022 financial year, while a second review ran from July to August 2023 in collaboration with the ministries of agriculture, water and land reform; industries, mines…

A Pan-African reflection on the burden of “Paying to Survive, Paying to Exist” towards determining our destiny and owning the future

Paul T. Shipale (with inputs by Folito Nghitongovali Diawara Gaspar) The phrase “paying to survive, paying to exist” captures a growing frustration felt across the world. Yet in Africa in general and Namibia in particular, despite the latter being ranked as one of Africa’s top performing countries, climbing from 15th to third place after South Africa and Mauritius according to the French publications Jeune Afrique and The Africa Report, there is a growing frustration that points toward an even deeper truth. It seems the issue is not simply about the cost of living but about the cost of powerlessness. Indeed,…

Rising fuel prices place pressure on mining sector

CHAMWE KAIRA The Chamber of Mines of Namibia has noted that rising fuel prices are increasing cost pressures for the mining sector, highlighting the importance of continued efficiency improvements and the adoption of innovative energy solutions to maintain competitiveness. According to the latest Monthly Mining Update for May, Namibia’s mining sector remains cautiously optimistic, supported by strong uranium and gold prices and the continued development of several mining projects.  However, higher fuel prices and broader increases in transport-related costs are contributing to a more challenging operating environment. The latest Namibia Consumer Price Index (NCPI) report released by the Namibia Statistics…

Data shows 4.5% drop in farm jobs, rising wage costs

CHAMWE KAIRA The agricultural sector has warned that the current trajectory of Namibia’s National Minimum Wage (NMW) implementation could undermine employment growth, following preliminary data indicating a decline in permanent jobs despite improved production conditions. According to preliminary findings from the Agricultural Employers’ Association (AEA) 2026 Wage Survey, permanent employment in the sector fell by 4.5% compared to the 2024 survey period. This decline was recorded even though the sector reportedly experienced better production conditions over the past two years. The reduction has largely been attributed to rising labour costs linked to the introduction of the National Minimum Wage. AEA…
