Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says the country would need N$8 billion to construct standardised sports facilities in all constituencies.
Nandi-Ndaitwah made these remarks in Windhoek on Tuesday at a dinner event honouring the Brave Warriors, following their loss to Angola in the Cosafa Cup over the past weekend.
“I have done my homework, and if N$8 billion is available, it is possible to have standardised sports fields in all constituencies,” she said.
She added that such funds would enable the country to have a regional capital in the form of a Grade 2 sports stadium.
“It does not matter when the money will be made available or whether, in three or five years, it will be done. This is not a campaign. We understand your appeal in advance, and we are working very hard towards that,” she said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah also acknowledged the delay in renovating the Independence Stadium so that it could host international matches.
She said that not only do funds cause delays in the process, but the existing laws are also hindering the work.
She committed to awarding the stadium renovation tender to the successful bidder by August of this year.
“Let’s look ahead and together bring sports and the creative industry to the highest level,” said Nandi-Ndaitwah.
She noted that sports contribute to the country’s economy and empower the Namibian people.
“Thank you, Brave Warriors. You made us proud, and we will work hard for you. Namibia is happy about your achievement. As a government, we owe you a lot. But very soon, that will be a history of the past,” she told the players.
Michael Situde, the executive committee member of the Namibia Football Association (NFA), called for a fast effort to upgrade the Independent Stadium to administer football and have proper sports infrastructure in the country.
“We call for fast efforts to the renovation of the Independence Stadium to ensure that football is administered with proper sports infrastructure,” he said.
Sidute appealed to the nation for funds to upgrade the Sam Nujoma Stadium.
The Minister of Sport, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero stressed the importance of sports in the country.
“President Nangolo Mbumba once said Namibia was not defeated by Angola, it lost. Sports bring artwork and patriotism. Continue doing a very great job. Well done, Brave Warriors,” said the minister.
For their efforts in reaching the tournament finals, the prayers received some gifts from the Vice President.
