President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has mourned the death of liberation struggle veteran and worker’s rights advocate Helao Joseph Shityuwete, who died on 29 August 2026, days after celebrating his 92nd birthday.
In a message of condolences, Nandi-Ndaitwah described Shityuwete as a courageous patriot whose life was marked by sacrifice, resilience and a commitment to Namibia’s liberation and the rights of workers.
His death came shortly after Namibia commemorated Heroes’ Day on 26 August, a day dedicated to honouring Namibians who sacrificed for the country’s freedom.
The President said Shityuwete belonged to the generation of patriots whose courage and selflessness helped shape Namibia’s history.
“Namibia has lost a distinguished son, a courageous liberation struggle veteran and a lifelong champion of the dignity and rights of workers,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
Shityuwete endured imprisonment on Robben Island for his opposition to apartheid and colonial rule. Despite the hardship, the President said his commitment to Namibia’s freedom remained unwavering.
She said Shityuwete continued serving the country through his writing and advocacy for labour rights, while also helping preserve the experiences and sacrifices of those who participated in the liberation struggle.
According to Nandi-Ndaitwah, Shityuwete’s death marks the end of an important chapter in Namibia’s history, but the principles he stood for will continue to form part of his legacy.
“His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in our nation’s history. However, the values for which he stood, and the freedom to which he devoted his life, will remain his enduring legacy,” she said.
The President extended condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Namibia to Shityuwete’s wife, Jane, his children and the wider Shityuwete family.
She said the family could take comfort in knowing that their loss was shared by a nation grateful for his contribution to Namibia’s freedom.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said Shityuwete’s name would remain honoured in Namibia’s history because of his contribution to the country’s liberation and his lifelong commitment to justice and workers’ rights.
“May his courageous soul rest in eternal peace,” she said.
