The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has introduced a modern Flight Information Display System (FIDS) at Walvis Bay International Airport, aimed at improving passenger experience through faster and more reliable access to real-time travel information.
The newly installed system, valued at approximately N$1.3 million, introduces digital flight information screens throughout the airport terminal, allowing passengers to receive timely updates on arrivals, departures, boarding times, gate allocations, and operational changes.
The displays have been strategically installed at key passenger touchpoints, including check-in areas, departure lounges, waiting areas, and other passenger service locations, ensuring that travellers have easy access to important flight information throughout their journey.
The NAC said the project forms part of its broader digital transformation efforts aimed at improving service delivery and creating a more efficient airport environment.
“The implementation of the new FlightInformation Display System reflects NAC’s commitment to service excellence and creating world-class airport experiences,” the company said.
The company added that the system would provide passengers with greater convenience and peace of mind by reducing uncertainty and improving the movement of travellers within the terminal.
“As passenger expectations continue to evolve, investments such as these ensure that Walvis Bay International Airport responds with modern, efficient, and customer-focused technology to meet passenger needs,” NAC stated.
The new technology consists of advanced FIDS software, professional display screens, dedicated operator workstations, and a robust server environment designed to support reliable performance.
According to NAC, airport personnel can now update and manage flight information more efficiently, ensuring passengers receive accurate notifications regarding arrivals, departures, boarding times, gate changes, and other operational updates.
Meanwhile, frequent Namibia visitor Piet Van Wyk welcomed the development, saying improvements in airport technology contribute to a more positive travel experience for visitors.
Speaking to the Observer Coastal on Wednesday, Van Wyk said modern airport systems help create confidence among travellers and reflect Namibia’s progress in strengthening its tourism infrastructure.
“I have been visiting Namibia regularly, and I have always been impressed by the country’s natural beauty, hospitality, and growing tourism infrastructure.
An airport is often the first and last impression a visitor has of a destination, so improvements such as the new Flight Information Display System at Walvis Bay International Airport make a meaningful difference,” Van Wyk said.
He added that access to clear and accurate flight information makes travelling easier, particularly for international visitors.
“Having clear, real-time flight information creates a sense of confidence and convenience, especially for international travellers who may be unfamiliar with the airport. It shows that Namibia is investing in modern services that match the expectations of today’s travellers,” he said.
Van Wyk further noted that efficient airport services play an important role in shaping visitors’ overall perceptions of Namibia.
“For tourists, a smooth airport experience contributes to the overall impression of a country. Small improvements in communication and efficiency can make a big difference in how visitors experience Namibia,” he said.
The NAC said the introduction of the FIDS demonstrates its commitment to adopting modern, customer-focused solutions as it works towards enhancing Namibia’s aviation infrastructure.
