A 22-year-old mother from the Okahandja district was arrested after she tried to kill her 11-month-old son by hanging him from the roof of a shack.
The infant was miraculously saved by his uncle.
Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, Spokesperson for Nampol, said the incident occurred on Saturday morning at the Uitkomst resettlement farm near Hochfeld.
“The baby was rescued by the suspect’s elder brother, who broke the door, entered and removed him from the hanging rope just in time. The victim is in a stable condition and received necessary medical assistance,” said Shikwambi.
The suspect is detained and set to appear in court today.
In a separate incident, the police in Omusati Region are investigating a matter in which the body of Uugwanga Paulus (35) was discovered in the bushes on Friday.
According to Shikwambi, the body was discovered in the Okahao Constituency’s Olumpelengwa village.
Cattle herders are said to have found the body while searching the area for their missing goats, and they then notified the police in Uutsathima village.
“The deceased person is originally from Oshilulu village in Okahao Constituency. The body had been transported to the Okahao Police mortuary for a post-mortem examination to be conducted and to determine the exact cause of death. His next of kin were informed and full details regarding his death are not yet established,” she said.
In a separate incident, an investigation was opened after 48-year-old Wilbard Johanna, choked on a piece of meat and died during a memorial service at the Onambugulu village of the Amuteya area.
After the incident on Friday at around 15:11, the body was taken to the mortuary of the Onandjokwe hospital for an autopsy.
According to Shikwambi, a post-mortem performed by a medical Doctor on Saturday 15 July confirmed that a piece of meat was found stuck in her airway.
Her next of kin have been informed.
On the same day at about 14h00, a 38-year-old fisherman from Luderitz died in a freak accident after he was hit on the head by a broken crane hook. After the blow to his head, the victim fell on the deck of the boat.
“While on board a fishing vessel, he was busy pulling a net on a rope when a wire broke and the hook hit him behind the head before he fell. The vessel returned to shore immediately and reached the port at around 21h30.,” Shikwambi said.
He was declared dead by a nurse at about 22h30.
His name could not be made public because his next of kin has not yet been informed.
Meanwhile, 37-year-old Jonathan Namando Hangula committed suicide by hanging himself in a tree on Saturday at about 19:20 at Omatunda village near Ohalushu in the Endola constituency.
His body was discovered with a rope around his neck and hanging from the tree.
“No suicide note was left behind and the motive for the at is unknown. His next of kin were informed,” she said.
