YOUNG OBSERVER | Lüderitz to host Oil and Gas Youth Open Day

The Namibia Youth Energy Forum (NYEF) will host the first Lüderitz Oil & Gas Youth Open Day next month.

This is part of NYEF’s efforts to connect young people and local businesses to opportunities emerging in Namibia’s growing oil and gas sector.

The event will take place on 20 June at the Lüderitz Waterfront Auditorium under the theme “Building Readiness. Creating Access.”

According to NYEF, the open day forms part of the organisation’s Youth Day commemorative activities and is expected to attract about 300 participants, including learners, students, young professionals, SMEs, parents, local authorities, community stakeholders and industry representatives.

NYEF said the initiative aims to create practical engagement between the Lüderitz community and Namibia’s offshore oil and gas industry through information sharing, career guidance and supplier readiness discussions.

“As Namibia’s offshore oil & gas sector continues to evolve, Lüderitz has increasingly emerged as one of the country’s most strategic coastal towns within the energy landscape,” NYEF said.

The organisation said many young people and local businesses in the town still struggle to access industry information and engagement platforms despite ongoing developments in the sector.

The programme will focus on career guidance, workforce readiness, SME participation, procurement opportunities, entrepreneurship and stakeholder networking.

The event will also feature participation from oil and gas operators, service companies, financial institutions, recruitment specialists, training institutions and public sector stakeholders involved in Namibia’s energy industry.

NYEF chief executive officer Fanuel Shinedima said the programme is aimed at ensuring local communities benefit from Namibia’s energy developments.

“Lüderitz is becoming increasingly important within Namibia’s energy future, and it is important that young people and local businesses are equipped with information, exposure and access to opportunity,” Shinedima said.

“This initiative is about creating practical engagement between industry and community,” he added.
