The Windhoek City police have urged the public to remain vigilant following the arrest of two suspected serial robbers on 28 August in the Dorado Park neighbourhood.
The head of City Police, Leevi Ileka, reassured the public, especially residents of Hochland Park and Dorado Park, that the city police are committed to ensuring their safety.
“We continue to urge the public to be very careful and report to us any suspicious movement they come across in their areas. We also urge everyone to have emergency numbers handy in case of emergencies,” said lleka.
The suspects, who were arrested around 04:00, are believed to be linked to a series of robberies and other criminal activities in Khomasdal, Dorado Park, Hochland Park, and Rocky Crest.
As part of an intensified patrol operation in response to a recent spike in crimes in the affected areas, the city police found the suspects hiding in a riverbed and arrested them.
Ileka confirmed that the suspects are connected to several notable incidents, including the robbery of a pregnant woman in Khomasdal, the assault and attempted robbery of a taxi driver, and the widely reported case where a man was dragged into a cemetery in Khomasdal.
“We managed to arrest the two suspects this morning who we believe have been terrorising the areas of Dorado Park, Hochland Park, and Rocky Crest. The crimes they have been committing range from theft from motor vehicles, housebreaking, and robberies,” Ileka said.
He explained that the city police had taken strategic measures to address the rising crime rates, leading to this morning’s arrests.
“Of late, we have been registering a lot of car thefts around that area. We came up with an intervention to go early to those areas to see if we could arrest the suspects. Luckily, we found them hiding in the riverbed, waiting for their prey.”
Further investigation revealed that the suspects have five outstanding cases against them, with one of them already under an arrest warrant.
