Walvis Bay airport gets new firefighting vehicle

The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has acquired an additional aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle for Walvis Bay International Airport as part of efforts to strengthen aviation safety and expand airport operations.

The new Rosenbauer firefighting vehicle will improve the airport’s emergency response capacity and help meet international aviation safety requirements.

NAC said the investment forms part of its strategy to maintain high safety standards while positioning Namibia as a stronger aviation and logistics hub in Southern Africa.

The company said modern rescue and firefighting equipment remains important as international aviation safety regulations continue to evolve.

“By enhancing its rescue and firefighting capabilities, Walvis Bay International Airport is better equipped to maintain and potentially improve its airport rescue and firefighting category from its current sixth. The move also allows for larger aircraft to land at the airport and provide confidence to international airlines and passengers,” NAC said.

According to the company, stronger airport safety infrastructure is also expected to support tourism, cargo movement and international air connectivity.

NAC said airlines consider airport safety standards when selecting destinations, making investments in emergency response systems important for future growth.

“Improved safety infrastructure is a critical factor for airlines when selecting destination airports, and NAC’s continued investment signals its readiness to support expanded operations,” the company said.

The company added that Walvis Bay remains strategically important as a coastal gateway connecting Namibia to regional and international markets.

NAC said the upgraded firefighting capacity will help support passenger and cargo operations while improving the airport’s operational readiness.
