President says genocide reparations talks will continue

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says Namibia will continue engaging Germany until the issue of the 1904–1908 genocide, apology and reparations reaches a “just and meaningful conclusion”.

In her message marking Genocide Remembrance Day on Thursday, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the country remains committed to ensuring that the atrocities committed against the Ovaherero and Nama people receive international recognition and historical acknowledgement.

“The pain and impact of the Genocide continue to be felt generations later,” she said.

She said the Namibian government, together with affected communities, will continue discussions with Germany on genocide, apology and reparations.

Nandi-Ndaitwah described the genocide as one of the darkest chapters in Namibia’s history and paid tribute to the thousands of Ovaherero and Nama people who died between 1904 and 1908 during German colonial rule.

Today Namibia marked its second Genocide Remembrance Day.
