MPs back Eiseb, call for stronger action against corruption

Members of the National Assembly on Friday unanimously endorsed President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s nomination of Bryan Eiseb as the next director general of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), with other members across party lines urging the commission to pursue corruption cases without fear or favor.

During the debate, IPC MP Tuhafeni Vaino said Parliament’s support came with high expectations, warning that the public had grown frustrated with the commission’s performance over the years.

“We are weary of the torturous two decades of sweeping corruption under the carpet. We are weary of the net that catches the small fish while the big fish slip through,” he said, adding that Parliament would “keep a keen eye on the ACC.”

PDM leader McHenry Venaani said Eiseb’s financial intelligence background should help the commission tackle sophisticated financial crimes, including transfer pricing and illicit financial flows.

“Let’s attack those that are taking N$300 million from our country’s shores through transfer pricing and base erosion,” he said, adding that the commission should also scrutinise corporate boards and other forms of high-level financial misconduct and urged the incoming leadership to take decisive action against high-level corruption.

The house approved Eiseb’s nomination without objection. Members also endorsed President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s nomination of Advocate Erna Lorraine van der Merwe for a one-year extension as deputy director general of the ACC to ensure continuity during the leadership transition.
