DBN pumps more than N$1.58 billion in clean energy projects

The Development Bank of Namibia (DBN) has invested more than N$1.58 billion in clean energy projects since its inception and supporting the development of 81.6 megawatts (MW) of clean energy capacity across the country.

DBN chief marketing and corporate affairs, Jerome Mutumba said green finance is not separate from development finance.

“It is becoming increasingly central to how Namibia will achieve sustainable economic growth, energy security, climate resilience and job creation,” Mutumba added.

He said while the DBN continues to implement its strategic priorities, the bank remains committed to mobilising and deploying capital in support of Namibia’s sustainable investment agenda.

“This includes working with government, development partners and the private sector to crowd in additional investment and accelerate climate-aligned development.”

The DBN was named the winner of the Green Financial Services/Institution category at the 5th Namibia Sustainable Development Awards, held on 3 September 2026.

The awards, hosted by the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia (EIF) in partnership with the Sustainable Development Advisory Council (SDAC), aim to recognise and reward institutions and individuals that demonstrate leadership, innovation and excellence in environmentally responsible practices, while promoting the adoption of sustainability best practices.

The Green Financial Services/Institution category recognises financial institutions that provide financial and technical solutions to advance investment in green technologies, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

It also acknowledges institutions that enable businesses to harness green finance opportunities while contributing to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy.

“This award affirms DBN’s role in using development finance to unlock sustainable investment. As Namibia’s national development finance institution, our responsibility extends beyond financing projects. We also help demonstrate that climate- aligned investments can be commercially viable, thereby creating confidence and opportunities for private capital to follow,” Mutumba said.

DBN said it remains committed to financing initiatives that promote cleaner energy, strengthen climate resilience and deliver lasting economic and developmental impact for Namibia.

“This recognition affirms the bank’s long- standing commitment to using development finance as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.”
