Over its 34-year tenure, the Swapo government has achieved significant progress in various sectors, from education and healthcare to infrastructure, social welfare, and poverty reduction.
This was said by Swapo’s secretary for information and mobilisation, Hilma Nicanor on Wednesday while outlining the party’s upcoming activities in preparation for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for November.
“It is difficult for one to ignore or distort the impressive achievements registered by the Swapo government in a country that suffered untold and despicable injustices perpetrated by successive colonial regimes,” said Nicanor.
She also emphasised the party’s Swapo’s ability to maintain and secure peace, stability, democracy and the rule of law over three decades.
According to her, this has been crucial for Namibia’s socio-economic development and reconstruction.
“It is therefore not surprising that the Namibian nation, judging from the numbers of members, supporters and sympathisers involved in the party’s recent campaign and recruitment activities, sees no hope in any other political formation other than Swapo,” Nicanor said.
She called on Swapo members and supporters to continue conducting themselves in accordance with the rule of law in a manner that does not undermine peace and stability.
“Swapo Party believes in peaceful political activities according to the ethos and values it stood for many years and continues to stand for. Let’s carry out our election campaign activities in a manner that fosters unity,” she said.
Nicanor added that despite the generally positive progress of our election campaign, the party is deeply concerned about the actions of a few individuals who, while claiming to be members, are engaging in activities that threaten to undermine unity and its efforts.
According to her, some elements have made concerted efforts to cause panic or confusion among party members, among other things, by distorting information in relation to ongoing court cases.
Nicanor said the party has always respected and acted in accordance with the rule of law, and where it may be involved in litigation, it has always acted in a responsible manner, including using all of its available resources, whether human or otherwise, to defend its rights and interests.
“The party will therefore vigorously defend itself in any action that may be instituted against it,” she added.
Sisa Namandje, the party’s legal advisor, stated that the party will “demolish” the court challenge that some party members filed in the High Court.
He also warned that those who brought the case would face legal difficulties.
“I invite you to read Swapo’s answers on the 30 August, it is demolition work. Something is going to be demolished. If you want to burn your figures, then come to court with a case like this. We are going to come with a counterclaim, a case within a case,” stressed Namandje.
