The Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, in a special message on International Women’s Day, stressed the profound significance of the day for the force and the wider society.
Marking a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call to action for accelerating gender parity, the General emphasized the Namibian Police’s dedication to recognizing and honouring the indispensable role women play across all facets of life, including in the realm of law enforcement and societal safety.
Under the theme of inspiring inclusion and fostering empowerment, General Shikongo proudly noted the Namibian Police’s ongoing commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women within its ranks.
By highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusivity, he articulated a vision for a police force strengthened by the talents and perspectives of women, capable of better serving the diverse needs of the community.
He said the occasion also serves as a platform to reflect on the broader societal challenges that persist, notably the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) that disproportionately affects women and girls.
With distressing statistics revealing thousands of GBV cases recorded in recent years, Shikongo’s message was clear: there is an urgent need for collective action to eradicate this human rights violation, which he described as a crime against humanity.
To this end, the Namibian Police, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has embarked on comprehensive strategies aimed at combating GBV.
These include enhancing cooperation, improving investigative processes, fostering partnerships, conducting educational and awareness programs, and enforcing regulations to mitigate factors contributing to GBV.
Furthermore, the decentralization of GBV Victim Protection Units across all regions demonstrates a tangible commitment to ensuring timely assistance for victims.
General Shikongo’s message was not just a reflection on the progress made but also a call to action to address the ongoing challenges in achieving gender equality and protecting the rights of women and children.
He reiterated Namibia’s adherence to international conventions such as the Convention on the Rights of Children (CRC) and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), showcasing the country’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of women and girls.
As International Women’s Day was celebrated across the globe, the General’s message was one of hope, determination, and solidarity.
He said that by recommitting to the pursuit of gender equality and the fight against GBV, Namibia reaffirms its dedication to creating a more inclusive, equitable, and safe society for all its citizens.
