Young political figures from across Namibia, known for their vigorous engagement with the government and their influence on policy during President Hage Geingob’s tenure, have momentarily set aside their differences to honour his legacy.
Prominent among them are Job Amupanda, leader of the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement; Michael Amushelelo, a noted social activist with the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEEF); Ally Angula, who has declared her independent presidential candidacy for the 2024 elections; Inna Hengari, a lawmaker from the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM); and Kadhila Amoomo, a prominent lawyer.
Despite their frequent criticism of President Geingob’s policies, particularly concerning land reform, corruption, and youth unemployment, these young leaders have expressed their condolences.
Amupanda, known for his outspoken views against the Swapo-led government’s approach to the Harambee Prosperity Plan II, extended his sympathies to the widow, Monica Geingos, the children, and the Geingob family. Announcing his presidential run for November 2024, Amupanda reflected on life’s transience and Geingob’s historical impact, pledging to continue the work Geingob left unfinished.
Amushelelo, whose activism has been driven by concerns over poverty and the exploitation of Namibians by foreign investors, particularly highlighted the Geingob family’s loss and called for national prayers for their strength.
Hengari, who has also faced arrest for her protests against youth unemployment, offered a succinct tribute, wishing the late president peace and ascendance.
Similarly, Amoono extended his condolences to both the family and the nation, emphasizing the importance of political leaders’ commitment to peace and stability during this challenging period.
This collective pause in political discourse to honour President Geingob underscores the profound respect these young leaders hold for his role in Namibia’s history, despite their past criticisms.
It reflects a moment of national unity and the shared desire to uphold the country’s peace and stability in the face of loss.
