Windhoek cyclists warned to avoid unopened airport highway

The Namibian Cycling Federation has cautioned cyclists against using the newly constructed road from the Waldorf offramp in Klein Windhoek leading to Hosea Kutako International Airport.

Federation President, Tauko Shilongo said contractors working on the road had instructed the federation to inform its members not to cycle on it until it is officially handed over to the Roads Authority.

‘’This is effective immediately, we kindly request that all cyclists refrain from training on this road until the Dr Hage Geingob Freeway is officially opened for public use,’’ said Shilongo.

He said the restriction applies to all sections, including tarred areas, gravel roads between carriageways, and intersections. He warned that ignoring the directive could lead to legal consequences.

‘’Please be aware that disregarding this directive carries serious legal and liability risks in the event of an accident. Additionally, we wish to maintain a positive and professional relationship with the Chinese contractor companies involved in the project,’’ Shilongo warned.

He acknowledged the challenge of finding safe training routes but urged cyclists to comply with regulations for their own safety and that of the community.
