In a historic development, Welwitschia Health Training Centre has been elevated to university status, now operating as Welwitschia University.
Monika Pendukeni, Chairperson of the Council and Co-Founder of Welwitschia University said this momentous milestone marks a new chapter for the institution, which is set to expand its academic programmes, strengthen research initiatives, and enhance collaborations with various sectors.
She stressed that the name change and status upgrade were approved by the Registrar of Private Higher Education Institutions under Section 28(2)(a)(iii) of the Higher Education Act, 2003 (Act No. 26 of 2003).
Pendukeni added that the registrar’s decision was published in Government Gazette number 8336 on 28 March 2024, following a recommendation from the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE).
“This prestigious designation reflects Welwitschia University’s unwavering dedication to fostering intellectual growth, innovation, and inclusive learning environments. Our pursuit of academic excellence has been recognised by regulatory authorities, affirming our status as one of Namibia’s premier higher education institutions,” Pendukeni said.
According to Pendukeni, the transition from a health training centre to a fully-fledged university opens new opportunities for Welwitschia University to broaden its academic offerings.
She said the institution plans to enhance its focus on health, social, technical, and management sciences, and strengthen partnerships with industry, government, and non-profit organisations.
Pendukeni added that these developments are set to enrich the educational experience for students, preparing them for successful careers in an increasingly competitive labour market.
“Welwitschia University, known for its unique and innovative approach to education, aims to become a leading institution in Namibia by providing high-quality, relevant education that meets the evolving needs of students and the broader community,” she said.
The university’s focus on health sciences, coupled with its expansion into social, technical, and management disciplines, positions it as a key player in the country’s educational landscape.
This transition reiterates Welwitschia University’s commitment to excellence and sets the stage for its continued growth and impact.

Professor Scholastika Iipinge, Chancellor and Co-Founder of Welwitschia University, expressed her excitement about the institution’s new status.

Dr Andreas Mwoombola, Vice Chancellor of Welwitschia University, acknowledged the crucial support from various stakeholders.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we must also recognise the continuous support of the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, the National Council of Higher Education, the Namibia Qualifications Authority, the Namibia Training Authority, and other stakeholders who have significantly contributed to our institution’s advancement,” he said.
