The Municipality of Walvis Bay is gearing up to host the 18th edition of the Southern African Inter-Municipal Association (SAIMSA) Games from 22 to 27 September.
This sporting event brings together municipalities from across Southern Africa to foster social interaction, encourage physical activity, and promote sportsmanship.
The 2024 SAIMSA Games will be presented under the theme “SADC Local Authority’s Employee Wellness, Enhanced Through Sports and Recreation.”
Councilor Richard Hoaeb, and chairperson of the organising committee, announced that municipalities from across Southern Africa will participate, each sending their best athletes to compete in a diverse range of sports.
These include Soccer, Netball, Volleyball, Snooker/Pool, Darts, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Fishing, Owela/Stone Games, Ring Board, Athletics, Golf, Aerobathon, and Tug of War.
Confirmed participating countries besides Namibia include Eswatini, Lesotho and Botswana.
The games will be held at multiple venues around Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
“Due to expected high attendance, with over 1 500 to 2 000 visitors, some events like Soccer and Netball will be relocated to the Swakopmund Stadium to accommodate the crowds. All available soccer fields will be utilised during the tournament,” said Hoaeb.
Hoaeb encouraged vendors from Walvis Bay and Swakopmund to bring traditional foods and cultural attire to the sports fields.
“Come and sell your Kapana,” she said.
The Walvis Bay municipality’s, spokesperson, Anita Kahiva gave the assurance that the municipality is working diligently to ensure the event’s success.
“Preparations are in full swing to accommodate our visitors, and we are committed to providing a memorable experience for all participants and guests,” Kahiva said.
