Vivo Energy Namibia has taken it upon itself to be a driver of health and wellness, social responsibility and community engagement for it strongly believes that physical activity and sports are essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The company officially launched the Vivo Energy Windhoek Marathon slated for 29 July this year.

The maiden Marathon is said to provide an opportunity for people of all ages and fitness levels to come together and challenge themselves while also enjoying the camaraderie of others.

The Managing Director for Vivo Energy Namibia Edward Walugembe said that the marathon is not just about promoting physical fitness but it is also about bringing people together and building stronger communities.

“We know that when people come together for a common goal, they can achieve great things. Making the Vivo Energy Windhoek Marathon is one good example, as participants join together to raise money for the Windhoek Mayoral Fund, which contributes to important charities and causes,” Walugembe said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Windhoek Magdalena Lombardt stated that the marathon is not just a sporting occasion but, also a celebration of unity, perseverance, and the power of the human spirit.

In addition, the Deputy Mayor stressed that the Vivo Energy Marathon is more than just a race. “It is an opportunity for all of us to join hands and make a meaningful impact on our community. With each stride taken, we will contribute to the betterment of our society by supporting various charitable causes that uplift the lives of those in need. Let us remember that this event is not just about personal achievement but, creating a positive change that resonates long after the last runner crosses the finish line,” she added.

The registration fee proceeds from the marathon race will be donated to the Windhoek Residents Mayoral Trust which will align with one of Vivo Energy’s themes, “Education, Environment, Health, Innovation or Road Safety”.

The Municipal Council of Windhoek launched the Mayoral Relief Fund in 2017 which has a social progression agenda within the boundaries of the city. In July 2022, the Fund was registered with the Master of High Court under the name Windhoek Residents Mayoral Trust, as a legal entity through which vulnerable residents and social welfare cases are supported.

Running concurrently with the registration, a Board of Trustees was appointed, to govern the corporate affairs of the Trust.

The focal areas of the Trust are geared towards supporting community development, reaching out to vulnerable residents and charitable organizations, and extending financial assistance towards educational programmes.

She emphasised that the Trust is dependent on financial support from members of our communities, both corporate and individual development partners, through donations and fundraising activities.

Therefore, encouraging all residents, whether seasoned runners or first-time participants, to embrace the challenge, and push their limits.

“I have full confidence that the Vivo Energy Marathon will be a resounding success and one to look forward to on our annual social calendar, moving forward,”said Lombardt.

Furthermore, she lamented that the true essence of a marathon lies not only in the distance covered but in the strength of the bonds forged along the way, adding that together, lives can be transformed, create lasting memories, and leave a legacy of unity and determination for generations to come.

Walugembe reiterated that their decision to sponsor the event, was because they believe in the importance of partnerships. Further maintaining that as a company, they strive to make a positive impact in the communities where they operate, by teaming up with like-minded institutions.

“We firmly believe that by supporting this Marathon, we can make a difference in the lives of people as a collective,” said the MD.
