The United States Embassy in Namibia has issued a safety advisory to its citizens, urging them to remain vigilant during and after the country’s presidential and national assembly elections.

The elections were held on Wednesday.

In a statement shared on its social media platforms, the embassy highlighted the potential for heightened activity during the election period.

“Throughout this period, as well as over the days following the elections, rallies and demonstrations may occur,” the statement read.

The embassy advised American nationals in Namibia to avoid large crowds and stay alert.

“Maintain a low profile, carry proper identification, review your personal security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of emergency,’’ stated the embassy.

Additional advice included monitoring local media for updates, factoring updated information into travel plans, and preparing for potential emergencies.

They added that citizens should also monitor local media for updates, incorporate updated information into their travel plans and activities, have a contingency plan for emergencies, and review the traveller’s checklist.

Some of the embassy staff members are serving as election observers, joining teams from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and other diplomatic missions.

These teams have been visiting polling stations across the country on election day to see how Namibians vote and support a transparent, credible, and participatory electoral process.
