The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), which is affiliated with the ruling party, Swapo, has asked its affiliates to contribute N$15 000 towards the funeral of the late Founding President Sam Nujoma.

In a memorandum issued by NUNW General Secretary, Job Muniaro, each affiliate is expected to submit their contributions by the 20th of this month.

“Your contributions will go a long way in ensuring that we give our Founding Father a respectful and deserving send-off,” the memo stated.

When contacted for comments, Muniaro explained that the contributions from affiliates would be used to purchase water.

“It is a common practice. Once the money is received, we will purchase water or other drinks and assist the government in that area. At the funeral, you might find that not everyone will have water, so we don’t contribute to other things,” he said.

Muniaro also added that they are aware of the state funeral, and they will only focus on water provision to ensure that everyone attending the funeral stays hydrated.

“It will be a long process, and on some days, there will be heat. We will make sure that there is enough water for everyone,” Muniaro added.

The NUNW was established by the Swapo in 1970 and has more than 90 000 members, with around 10 affiliates.

Nujoma, who died on the 8th of this month, will be buried on 1 March.

His remains will be transported to all 14 regions, where state memorial services will be held, starting on the 21st, with Omusati beginning at Okahao.
