Amid one of the most severe droughts, the Namibia Traditional Authority Trust (NTAT), with the support of its business arm, Oonani Investment Group, launched a nationwide Drought Relief Food Drive aimed at providing vital sustenance to more than 2 300 families across all 14 regions of the country.
Oonani’s chief executive officer, Jamie-Lee Nels said in a statement on Wednesday, said the initiative, which centres on distributing essential food packages to the most vulnerable communities, seeks to mitigate the widespread food insecurity exacerbated by failing crops and dying livestock.
“Namibia is grappling with the devastating effects of prolonged drought, which has left families in many rural areas struggling to access food and necessities. The Drought Relief Food Drive is a lifeline for countless households,” she said.
According to Nels, each food relief box, designed to ensure adequate nourishment, will be distributed to beneficiaries identified by 53 traditional authorities, ensuring that aid reaches those most in need.
Nels stressed the importance of this collaborative approach.
“For a seamless process and to ensure that the relief reaches the right people, we are working closely with local traditional authorities,” she said.
While applauding the involvement of partners such as Bellatrix Investment Managers, MUMI Investments Managers, and Monasa Advisory and Associates, Nels called for more support from the public and private sectors.
“This is a national crisis, and it would be unpatriotic to leave it solely to the government. We urge individuals and institutions to join hands with us by providing monetary or in-kind donations to assist more families and create a greater impact,” she said
She added that transparency and accountability are central to the initiative.
According to Nels, Oonani has pledged to oversee all aspects of the food drive, including distribution and management, with detailed reports to be provided at the project’s conclusion.
“This commitment ensures equitable and efficient aid delivery to even the most remote corners of Namibia,” she said.
The food drive represents more than just an emergency response. It is a testament to community solidarity and the spirit of compassion.
“Together, we can ensure that no Namibian faces hunger during these trying times,” Nels said while also urging the nation to rally behind this critical mission.
“Members of the public are encouraged to contribute by sponsoring food boxes or making monetary donations. Corporate sponsors are also invited to pledge support, with recognition provided through public campaigns,” sha said.
