The essential role of public servants in fostering unity and serving all citizens

Sem B.I David

Public servants occupy a unique and vital position in any government system. They are the backbone of efficient governance, tasked with serving the people impartially and without bias. Their core duty is to deliver quality services to the public, regardless of political beliefs, affiliations, or backgrounds. For democracy to function effectively, public servants must remain neutral, working collaboratively with all political parties—including opposition members—to ensure smooth service delivery. Unfortunately, we have seen instances where some public servants serve selectively, exhibiting bias and turning away citizens with the weak justification that they did not vote for them, or are from the “enemy” party. This behavior undermines the principles of democracy, fostering division rather than unity. Public servants must remember that their role is to represent all constituents, irrespective of political affiliations, and promote inclusivity, not exclusion.

Serving Everyone, Regardless of Political Affiliation

Public servants must recognize that their work extends beyond political lines. They are not representatives of a particular party, ideology, or government administration, but rather, they serve the entire population—citizens who hold diverse political views, social backgrounds, and beliefs. In a democratic system, while governments may change, public service must remain consistent and unwavering in its commitment to serving the public at large. By upholding this principle, public servants can foster trust and confidence across all sectors of society, ensuring that no one feels excluded or disenfranchised due to their political stance.

Embracing Proposals from All Political Parties

A crucial aspect of public service is the ability to consider and evaluate proposals from all political parties objectively. Whether the proposal comes from the ruling party or the opposition, public servants must assess its potential impact on the public and implement solutions that benefit everyone. Public servants should not be swayed by political pressures but should instead prioritize the common good, relying on rigorous, evidence-based decision-making processes.

A willingness to accept and evaluate proposals from all sides can lead to better policies and solutions that are inclusive and meet the needs of a broader population. It also enhances the transparency and accountability of the public service, as citizens can see that decisions are being made based on merit and necessity rather than political allegiance.

Collaboration with the Opposition

In a healthy democracy, the opposition plays a critical role in holding the ruling party accountable and offering alternative solutions to pressing issues. Public servants must collaborate with opposition members to ensure that their perspectives and concerns are integrated into policy-making and service delivery. This collaboration, across party lines, strengthens democratic institutions and ensures that decisions are made in the best interests of the public, rather than for political gain.

Such cooperation can also help resolve political gridlocks, foster mutual respect among party members, and ensure that citizens are not caught in the crossfire of partisan conflicts. A united effort between public servants and politicians from all sides ensures that governance remains focused on serving the people, rather than being hindered by divisive politics.

Creating a Smooth Sphere of Service Delivery

Ultimately, the goal of public service is to create a smooth and efficient system of service delivery for all citizens. Public servants must understand that the public they serve is diverse, encompassing a wide range of political opinions, cultural backgrounds, and personal beliefs. It is their responsibility to ensure that services are delivered equitably—with fairness, efficiency, and respect for all. By fostering a culture of professionalism, impartiality, and respect for diversity, public servants can help create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. Whether a citizen supports the ruling party or the opposition, they should expect to receive the same high-quality service, free from bias or discrimination.

In conclusion, public servants have a responsibility to serve the public in a manner that transcends party boundaries, carrying out their duties not just at the behest of the government, but in service to all citizens. By collaborating with opposition members and embracing recommendations from all political parties, public servants can help build a more inclusive and efficient administration. Their focus should always be on the needs of the people, not political agendas, and they must demonstrate a commitment to providing impartial, high-quality, and equitable services to everyone, regardless of political affiliation. In doing so, public servants contribute to the development of a society where democracy thrives, citizens have faith in their government, and public service truly reflects the interests of the general public.
