Windhoek Observer’s Namibian of the Year is an annual supplemental issue of the Windhoek Observer and its website, featuring extraordinary Namibians, a group, an idea or an institution that has done the most to positively influence the events of the year within the country and beyond.
To be selected as the Namibian of the Year such an individual has to make a meaningful impact in the country and has to capture the imagination of the nation.
This year, rather than the traditional individual of the year we have chosen the booming Namibian energy sector and the trailblazers at the helm of policymaking and implementation as the “Namibian of the Year’.

This year, Namibia’s energy sector has been selected as a precinct of excellence because it is populated by a great variety of visionaries.
Namibia stands at the forefront of an energy revolution, uniquely positioned to harness a diverse array of energy resources and the nation’s energy sector is rapidly transforming into the locomotive that will drive its future economic prosperity, embodying a model for sustainable development and innovation.
The energy landscape is characterized by a rich tapestry of opportunities, spanning from traditional hydrocarbons to cutting-edge green hydrogen and renewable energy technologies.
This diversity not only positions Namibia as a potential global energy hub but also facilitates a symbiotic relationship between various energy sources, enhancing its economic and environmental sustainability.

Recent times have witnessed a surge in energy sector investments, underpinned by significant discoveries in the Orange Basin and advancements in green hydrogen technologies.

His contributions were internationally acknowledged at COP 28, where he was honoured with the African Presidential Green Infrastructure Investment Statesman of the Year award, reflecting his commitment to green infrastructure investments and sustainable development.

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, is widely seen as the driving force behind Namibia’s energy sector. He recently showcased the country’s oil and gas discoveries and progress in green hydrogen.
