Youth demand end to corruption …and want BIG now

Youth demand end to corruption …and want BIG now

Tujoromajo Kasuto Youth are questioning why they have to accept and live with growing unemployment, poverty and crime as the inheritors of a free Namibia. The youth is angry that their supposed freedom exists only on paper but not in practice. They feel that they are living as impoverished slaves, struggling to survive while being told that Namibia is flourishing. They decry that government plans and projects such as Vision 2030, Targeted Intervention Programme for Employment and Economic Growth (TIPEEG), the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP) and Food Bank have not eradicated poverty. Instead, a few enriched themselves at the expense…

Whither to Namibia, is there ever a point of halting and/or return?

A young man last week lost his life in Walvis Bay over a vetkoek. He grabbed a vetkoek from a street vendor and while trying to get away to go and enjoy, which may have been his first eat in how many days, who knows, and indeed the last, he was hit by a car. A sad story indeed! Many a times our government has been priding itself in the fact people in the country do not die from hunger. A young lad lost his life after grabbing something to eat which in the end he could not enjoy having…

Panic and mayhem as more Namibians request for evaluation of qualifications

Eba Kandovazu MORE Namibians are approaching the Namibia The Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) for urgent evaluations of their qualifications, an issue the NQA says is concerning. A total 915 people have approached the NQA for evaluations between August and September, Public Relations Officer Absalom Absalom told the Windhoek Observer, adding that says the escalation of requests for urgent evaluations is concerning. “As a result of this practice, qualification holders often miss out on employability and access to additional training when opportunities arise. As most employers now demand an NQA qualifications evaluation report during the recruitment process and training providers also…

According to Hengari, Nigeria stands at 33.3 percent, Namibia at 33.4 percent and South Africa at 34 percent. “These countries have the highest unemployment rates not only in Africa but in the world as tracked by Bloomberg. Namibia’s pro-life and coalition of churches say NO to innocent ‘killings’

Tujoromajo Kasuto The pro-life movement in Namibia, as well as a coalition of churches, is adamant that no innocent born or unborn person should be killed. Morasha Magazi, 21-year-old founder of Fetus Lives Matter, says they find the call for abortion appalling and is “window dressed” with names such as pro-choice, women’s rights, reproductive rights and justice while in reality it is a call for murder (intentional taking of a life of another living being”. Magazi adds that the choice they are being “demanded” to surrender to is the choice of “life and death”, asking how is it that Namibia…

‘All pregnancies should be wanted’ . . . Promoting abortion access in ways that are equitable, just and true

‘All pregnancies should be wanted’ . . . Promoting abortion access in ways that are equitable, just and true

Advocate Bience Gawanas This week the Parliament of Namibia will hold public hearings to re-engage on the issue of abortion in Namibia. I welcome this platform, and appreciate the efforts of the over 62 000 Namibians who signed a petition last year calling for the liberalisation of the abortion laws which brought us to this moment. Sexual and reproductive health and rights of women, and particularly maternal mortality and unwanted and early pregnancy are issues that are very dear to me. The opportunity to amend our abortion laws provides us with the chance to fundamentally advance the rights of women…

Human rights lawyer lauds gay couple’s victory judgement

Eba Kandovazu HUMAN rights lawyer, Norman Tjombe, says the High Court ruling in favour of a married gay couple declaring their first born son, conceived via surrogacy, a Namibian citizen, is one to be applauded, as it places Namibia 50 years ahead in terms of human rights and equality. Phillip Luhl and Delgado Castaneda, a Mexican national approached the High Court to have their two-year-old son, Yona, declared a Namibian citizen by descent, after the Home Affairs and Immigration ministry declined him citizenship. This week, Judge Masuku ruled in favour of the couple. The ministry wanted the couple to provide…

Amupanda’s housing initiative may not be cast in ideological impotence, bankruptcy, opportunism

“The lack of affordable land for housing is the main cause of Namibia’s housing crisis and the continuous rapid growth of informal settlements,” notes the Mayor of Windhoek when announcing the outcome of the land and housing workshop, which the City hosted end August beginning September. “Crisis”, sounds like an understatement by the Mayor in describing what has been happening on the housing provision frontier since independence, which can aptly be described as a ticking bomb, not only for the City of Windhoek, but all over the country. “Rapid growth” is also a misnomer because looking at what has come…
