Niël Terblanché Namibia must search for opportunities to effectively manage rivers that stretch over international boundaries because it could be a very sensitive political issue. The country currently is a party to six shared watercourse agreements and a signatory to two international legal instruments aimed at fostering transboundary water resources management and promoting cooperation. To further strengthen transboundary water management, in 2021, Namibia expressed interest in acceding to the 1992 UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.
