CHAMWE KAIRA Production in Namibia decreased by 14% to 500 000 carats, reflecting intentional action to lower production at Debmarine Namibia, partially offset by planned higher grade mining and better recoveries at Namdeb, the Anglo American production report for the third quarter ended 30 September revealed. Anglo American owns De Beers, which in turn is a 50-50 partner with the government in Debmarine Namibia, Namdeb Holdings and Namibia Trading Diamond Company (NDTC). Mining sector employed 16 147 people in 2022

Chamwe Kaira Total direct employment in the mining industry increased by 6.9% in 2022 and the sector collectively employed 16,147 people. The increase was a result of the new employment positions created on Debmarine Namibia’s new mining vessel and increased exploration activities. The direct employment consisted of 8,391 permanent employees, 742 temporary employees and 7,014 contractors, the Chamber of Mines of Namibia announced this week. Staff Writer Debmarine Namibia in partnership with the University of Namibia, in addition to the initial machine availed at the launch of the lab in August 2020, recently sponsored a second PCR machine in effort to accelerate the country’s Covid-19 testing capacity at cost of N$ 3.6 million.
