The leader of the Landless People’s Movement (LPM), Bernadus Swartbooi, has accused the ruling Swapo Party of using borrowed money to create job opportunities as a ploy in its election campaign.
Speaking LPM rally in Ondangwa on Saturday, Swartbooi said that Swapo is investing funds into projects to appeal to the youth.
“They are taking money that we do not have, borrowing that money, and putting it into projects, saying young people come, there are jobs,” he said.
He cautioned voters against succumbing to manipulation and instead encouraged them to consider the future.
Swartbooi also made the point that people are not developing the agricultural sector to produce food independently.
He claimed the land had been given to Chinese and rich people, while the poor remains landless.
Swartbooi also mentioned the health sector, noting that some officials open their own medical facilities to profit from the shortage of medicines at hospitals.
He observed that the north is still facing water shortages.
According to him, the nation is concerned about the future because of the suffering it has endured, and there are many unanswered questions surrounding it.
“Your today does not look good. Your yesterday did not look good. Your yesterday of elders did not look good, and tomorrow we have questions about how it will look,” he stated.
Swartbooi claimed that one million Namibians lack access to food, leading to hunger and food insecurity.
“These are questions we should ask,“ he said.
He further claimed that some leaders only come to gather votes from the people and then forget about them.
“You have the power to remove the rot. What will you do after the elections?” he questioned.
Swartbooi has observed that the country is not making any progress.
Sophia Shaningwa, the secretary-general of the Swapo Party, did not respond to questions sent to her at the time of publication.
