The Swapo Party has no plans to host a remembrance ceremony for its former president, Hage Geingob, who passed away on 4 February last year.
This was confirmed by Swapo Youth League Secretary, Ephraim Nekongo to the Windhoek Observer on Monday.
“No formal communication was issued, but those who will be hosting remembrance ceremonies are welcome to do so,” Nekongo said.
Swapo’s spokesperson, Hilma Nikanor, also confirmed that she does not know about any planned events.
“All I am aware of is the wreath-laying ceremony at Heroes Acre, where the gates are open to the public,” Nikanor said.
Geingob served as Swapo’s president until his death.
While the party will not be organizing any official event, the State House has announced that it will hold two commemorative ceremonies in his honour.
The public is invited to pay tribute at his grave at the Heroes Acre from 12h00 until 16h00.
In a media advisory, State House public relations officer Dennis Shikwambi stated that President Nangolo Mbumba would officiate the ceremonies at Heroes’ Acre and State House today.
In December the Office of the Former First Lady and the One Economy Foundation, Monica Geingos shared a tribute to her husband in which his passing is described as not just a loss of a leader but that of a guiding light and a symbol of unity and progress.
“His legacy is one of selfless service, integrity, and a belief in the power of unity. His dedication to his people, his vision for a stronger Namibia, and his commitment to togetherness will forever inspire us. Saying goodbye wasn’t easy,” said the foundation.
The foundation said even as Geingos navigated her own grief, she continued her work with dedication.
Through the One Economy Foundation, Geingos focus on empowering young people, championing equality, and creating opportunities for those who need them most.
“She showed us what it means to persevere even when the heart is heavy. 2024 has been a difficult year for all of us, and for the Office of the Former First Lady and the One Economy Foundation, it was especially challenging. But through it all, your love and support have been constant. You reminded us that even in the darkest times, we can lean on each other. For that, we are deeply grateful,” said the foundation.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly’s senior public relations officer, Sacky Kadhikwa announced on Sunday that the planned Parliament session, which was scheduled to commence today, has been postponed.
“This is done in solidarity and respect for the anniversary of the late president’s death,” Kadhikwa said.
He also explained that the National Assembly is not directly involved in organizing any event, including those hosted by the State House.
