Snake handler Stretch Combrink was bitten by a zebra snake at the Living Desert Snake Park at Swakopmund Adventure Park while feeding the snake and replacing its water.
According to the park, the incident happened on Saturday, 12 September, when the snake mistook the movement of Combrink’s hand for food and bit him.
Combrink was rushed to Welwitschia Hospital in Walvis Bay, where he underwent surgery within about 90 minutes of the incident. The park said he is recovering well, although he remains in some pain, with the full extent of the injury yet to be determined.
The park said the snake was not to blame, describing the incident as an accident resulting from the animal’s natural instincts.
