Mekenificent Business Hub, in collaboration with the Swakopmund Municipality and other partners, is organising the Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Marathon to raise awareness about ocean safety and prevent drowning incidents.

The event’s second edition will take place in Swakopmund on December 21, under the theme “A Safer Coast.”

The inaugural marathon was held in Windhoek in 2023.

Mekenificent Business Hub founder, Meke Namindo on Thursday said the event is a festive fun run or walk to raise awareness of keeping the ocean safe and preventing drowning, which can increase during the holiday season.

“We are committed to making a positive impact on our community. This year’s theme is “A Safer Coast,” which aims to raise awareness about water safety and drowning prevention,” said Namindo.

Swakopmund Municipality’s local economic development officer, Rauna Shipunda, said the municipality is excited to partner with Mekenificent to promote water safety and create a festive atmosphere for the community and visitors alike.

Jonas Sheyavali from Aquamund, one of the event’s partners, said they are committed to protecting the country’s coastal environment, and the event aligns perfectly with its mission.

Ambulance service provider MR24/7 Rescue Services representative, Conrad Jacobs said they are proud to support the initiative and contribute to a safer coast.

Frans Antonio from Coca-Cola Namibia said the company is thrilled to keep participants hydrated and support the important cause.

The event will feature a 5km and 10km route winding through the streets of Swakopmund.

Participants are encouraged to dress up as Santa Claus, elves, or any other holiday character.

50% of the proceeds from the event will be donated to purchase essential equipment for local rescue services.
