The festive season has officially arrived in Swakopmund with the lighting of the town’s iconic Christmas tree.
The tradition that brings residents and visitors together in celebration was held on Monday evening during a special ceremony led by the town’s outgoing mayor, Dina Namubes, who said that the Christmas lighting ceremony is a moment everyone looks forward to.
“It marks the beginning of a festive period filled with warmth, hope, and unity,” she said.
The mayor expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that made the event possible.
“This tree is more than just a festive decoration—it is a cherished symbol marking the start of our holiday season and brings joy to both residents and holidaymakers alike,” she said.
According to Namubes the Christmas tree with its sparkling lights and vibrant decorations, is a demonstration of community spirit and corporate generosity.
Key contributors to the initiative included Orano, West Coast Aluminium, and Kobus Walles Electric, among others.
Namubes extended her heartfelt gratitude to these partners.
“Your contributions serve as a shining example of community spirit and corporate responsibility. Without your generosity and commitment, we would not have been able to bring the festive lights to life in the way that we have tonight,” she said.
Namubes also highlighted the importance of togetherness and generosity during the holiday season.
“This is a season for family and friends to come together, for communities to connect, and for each of us to reflect on the blessings we have in our lives,” she said.
She encouraged residents and visitors to embrace the spirit of Christmas through kindness, giving, and participation in the town’s many planned activities, which include local markets, holiday festivities, and the enjoyment of the town’s enchanting decorations.
Acknowledging the challenges some may face during this time, the Namubes reminded everyone to extend a hand to those in need.
“Let us also remember those who may be less fortunate and share the spirit of kindness and giving wherever we can,” she urged.
Namubes urged people to continue to spread the light, not just in Swakopmund but in their hearts, throughout the festive season.
She also invited everyone to partake in Swakopmund’s holiday magic, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
