The Swakop Uranium has contributed N$7.9 billion to the local economy through procurement, taxes, royalties, and social development.
The company released its 2023 sustainability report in Windhoek on Monday.
The report was launched under the theme “Leading in Mining Excellence.”.
In a speech delivered on her behalf by international relations deputy minister, Jennely Matundu, mines and energy deputy minister, Kornelia Shilunga said Swakop Uranium is poised to become a global leader in the supply of uranium because.
She added that she has reliable information that the Husab Mine will reach its nameplate capacity by the end of the year, which will raise Namibia’s global production ranking.
“As outlined in the report, production surged from 3 959 tonnes in 2022 to 5 318 tonnes in 2023, indicating the exceptional capabilities of the Husab Mine, now recognised as the second-largest operating uranium mine in the world,” said Shilunga.
In 2023, the company created 6 000 direct and indirect jobs.
Shilunga commended the company for contributing to the improvement of local employment and the living conditions of the surrounding communities, as well as the transfer of technology and skills to Namibians.
“I wish to reaffirm the government’s commitment to support initiatives that promote economic growth, environmental protection, and the improvement of the living conditions of its citizens.,” she said.
Shilunga said the Ministry of Mines and Energy, together with other government departments, are striving to support the mining industry to build a unique and sustainable uranium brand.
She called on the Swakop Uranium leadership to empower its workforce by creating an inclusive work environment of safety and fair labour practices.
According to the report, the company created wealth amounting to N$16.4 billion in 2023 compared to N$12.6 billion in 2022.
Operating costs stand at N$9.8 billion, with the total direct economic value generated at N$947 million.
China General Nuclear Power Group president, Gao Ligang said the company believes that excellence in mining goes beyond the extraction of resources.
“It is about the responsibility we hold to the environment, the communities we serve, and the future we are building together,” said Ligang.
He added that the report showcases how Swakop Uranium is setting the standard for responsible mining.
“These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work of the entire Swakop Uranium team. But perhaps what is most significant is the commitment to improving the lives of the people in this great country through job creation, local procurement, community engagement,” said Ligang.
Husab Mine was constructed in 2013.
The first uranium production was in 2016 and ramping up started in the following year.
The company recorded total tons mined per annum exceeding 100 million tons for the first time.
In 2023, it exceeded its targeted production from 4700 to 5318.
The company also celebrated a milestone of 10 years in mining.
