Windhoek Councillor Mathew Shoongo has urged residents of Saamstaan informal settlement to use designated skip containers properly and refrain from dumping waste alongside the containers.

Shoongo made the call during the latest edition of the Mayoral Clean-up Campaign held at Saamstaan, near Hillside Primary School in Greenwell Matongo, within the Samora Machel Constituency.

The campaign exposed ongoing challenges with waste disposal in the area, with piles of rubbish found dumped next to skip containers despite the facilities being available for residents to dispose of their waste.

Shoongo expressed concern that such practices undermine efforts to keep communities clean and healthy. He urged residents to take responsibility for their surroundings by placing waste inside the designated containers, rather than leaving it on the ground.

He said proper use of the skip containers would also assist the City of Windhoek in carrying out efficient waste collection and maintaining cleaner neighbourhoods.

The Mayoral Clean-up Campaign forms part of the City of Windhoek’s broader waste management efforts, combining physical clean-up activities with public education aimed at encouraging responsible waste disposal among residents.

The campaign also received support from members of the City of Windhoek Junior Council and representatives from the Samora Machel Constituency Office.
