The Sam Nujoma Foundation has condemned the circulation of fake news on social media that abuses the image of Namibia’s founding president for political propaganda and electioneering purposes.
In a statement issued on 21 November, the Foundation called on the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling for deceptive tactics aimed at spreading misinformation.
The Foundation clarified that these actions seek to damage the reputation of Sam Nujoma, whose contributions to the nation are widely recognised.
“The Sam Nujoma Foundation distances itself and the Founding President from any partisan agenda or misuse of his image,” the Foundation stated.
It emphasised that Nujoma’s legacy, achieved through his leadership of the SWAPO Party, continues to represent unity and sacrifice.
The foundation also reiterated that Nujoma is retired and deserving of rest, remaining a symbol of national progress and unity.
Nujoma led SWAPO from its formation to attaining Namibia’s independence in 1990. Since his retirement, he has refrained from political activities. The foundation clarified that Nujoma does not endorse any political agendas or electioneering efforts.
The foundation further urged political leaders to focus on addressing the country’s pressing issues, particularly those affecting the youth, who represent the future of the nation.
In conclusion, the Sam Nujoma Foundation encouraged all Namibians to be cautious when encountering online content that could undermine the integrity of political discourse.
“We urge the public to not fall prey to such deceptive tactics,” the foundation said.
