Salt exports average N$59 million

Namibia exported salt valued at N$59 million, mainly exported to Nigeria and South Africa in August, according to the Namibia International Merchandise Trade Statistics Bulletin.

The bulletin, which is produced by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), said on the demand side, the country imported salt valued at N$1.4 million, which was primarily sourced from South Africa.

Over the entire period (Aug 2023 to Aug 2024), the value of salt exported averaged N$59.9 million, with the largest value recorded in March at N$86.2 million and the lowest value recorded in September 2023 at N$28 million.

For August, Namibia’s was a net exporter when it comes to trade in food items excluding live animals, with a trade surplus of N$223 million.

From August 2023 to August 2024, Namibia averaged a trade surplus on food items excluding live animals of N$371 million, with a trade deficit of N$91 million only witnessed in the month of November 2023.

Moreover, the highest trade surplus was witnessed in December 2023 at a value of N$1 billion.

In August, the NSA’s report looked at Namibia’s trade with Gambia.

From 2015 to 2023, Namibia exported goods worth N$1.5 million to Gambia, while Gambia supplied goods worth N$2.8 million during the same period.

Road imports totalled N$7.6 billion, accounting for 61.7 percent of all goods imported into the nation.

Motor vehicles for the transportation of goods’, inorganic chemical elements and motor cars for the transportation of persons’ were the commodities with the highest value imported via this respective mode of transport.

Sea transport followed in second place, accounting for 35.1 percent of all goods imported into the country and its basket comprised mainly of petroleum oils, fertilisers, and other machinery and equipment specialised for particular industries’.

Telecommunications equipment, medicaments, and medical instruments and appliances were the main commodities transported via air, accounting for 3.1 percent of all goods imported into Namibia.

During August, South Africa took first place as Namibia’s main export destination, accounting for 25.1 percent of exports, Botswana was in second place with a share of 19 percent, while Zambia occupied the third position with a share of 10.1 percent.

China and Spain took the fourth and fifth positions, contributing 8.5 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively.
