Namibia and Qatar are engaging in discussions to enhance bilateral ties across key sectors, including trade, mining, agriculture, and tourism.
The talks coincide with President Nangolo Mbumba’s visit to Doha.
Mbumba travelled to Qatar before the weekend to attend the 22nd Doha Forum, which took place on Saturday and Sunday.
Press Secretary of the Namibian Presidency, Alfredo Hengari on Saturday told the Windhoek Observer that the government is exploring options for exporting meat products to the State of Qatar, specifically lamb and mutton.
“Qatar has expressed interest in collaborating with Namibia in the areas of mining, agriculture, and tourism. Qatar, as a major player in the oil and gas sector, sees significant potential in expanding its engagement with Namibia.” Hengari said.
A key aspect of the discussions also revolved around the resumption of direct flights between the two countries by Qatar Airways. The airline previously operated flights between Windhoek and Doha.
“It is the expressed wish of the Namibian government to explore how Qatar Airways can resume flights between Windhoek and Doha. This would not only improve travel but also support our growing tourism sector,” said Hengari.
The two governments have also discussed the potential for collaboration on infrastructure projects, particularly at Hosea Kutako International Airport.
With increasing passenger and cargo volumes, there is a pressing need for a new terminal to alleviate congestion.
Hengari noted that Qatar could play a role in this development, helping to expand the airport’s capacity and support Namibia’s growing international trade and tourism industries.
According to Hengari, Qatar’s interest in Namibia’s resources, particularly in mining and agriculture, aligns with the country’s strategic goals to diversify its economic partnerships.
