Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, recognizing Namibia’s vulnerability to climate change, has stressed the importance of the disaster risk engagement communication strategy as a crucial element of risk preparedness.
“We must pave the way for a paradigm shift in disaster risk management and adopt an approach that is steeped in proactive measures, vigilance, and robust communication strategies,” she said.
The Premier made these remarks during the official launch of the awareness and communication strategy for disaster risk management in the capital recently.
She reiterated that the platform’s objective is to enhance the national capacity to prevent, mitigate, prepare for, and respond effectively to natural disasters, ensuring a swift recovery.
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila pointed out the ongoing climate change challenges in Namibia, including an increase in weather-related emergencies such as floods and droughts, which have had a devastating impact on the country’s livelihoods.
She noted that these weather-related emergencies have eroded the socio-economic progress achieved in the country, emphasizing the urgent need to develop mechanisms that enhance adaptive capacities and resilience to climate change effects.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of providing accurate disaster risk information promptly to facilitate effective coordination.
Simultaneously, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila called upon all stakeholders to support and collaborate in executing the strategy, emphasizing that continuous advocacy and implementation of the strategy would significantly enhance capacities to mitigate the adverse effects of disasters.
This marks the first national awareness and communication strategy for disaster risk management hosted in Namibia. Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the global challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for accurate information to address disaster risks effectively.
