The ruling Swapo Party has stated that President Hage Geingob is in good spirits and is receiving excellent medical care.
Swapo Party Vice President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said that President Geingob will continue overseeing party and government affairs while prioritizing his medical treatment.
Nandi-Ndaitwah acknowledged the natural concern of Namibians for the health of their Head of State and expressed gratitude for the plethora of good wishes for President Geingob’s swift and full recovery.
She said that the Swapo Party and the people of Namibia deeply appreciate the trust and transparency Geingob has consistently demonstrated in his leadership roles.
Furthermore, Nandi-Ndaitwah appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the President and his family, allowing them space to focus on his recovery without undue speculation.
President Geingob has recently been diagnosed with cancer, a discovery made during routine medical check-ups and a subsequent biopsy.
This diagnosis followed a colonoscopy and gastroscopy the President underwent at the beginning of January.
His medical team has advised him to undergo appropriate treatment to address the detected cancerous cells.
Despite these health challenges, President Geingob has chosen to continue fulfilling his presidential responsibilities.
This decision is in line with his longstanding commitment to public office, effective governance, and a policy of transparency and accountability, particularly in matters related to his health.
The 82-year-old President has a history of overcoming serious health issues.
He previously disclosed in 2014, during his tenure as Prime Minister, that he had survived prostate cancer.
He also announced that he underwent a minor aortic surgical procedure in June 2023.
