Several political parties have condemned the brutal killings of six members of one family in Usakos, calling for justice, accountability, and urgent intervention to address social challenges facing the country.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, involved the murder of four minors, a teenager, and an elderly woman.
A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested and appeared in court, where he was remanded in custody while police investigations continue.
Authorities suspect the victims were killed with an axe before their remains were set alight.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement condemned what it described as a barbaric and inhumane act.
“This incident is not just a criminal matter. It is a societal crisis that must compel us to ask. What is happening to our communities, to our youth, and our nation’s moral fabric?” The party asked.
The AR then said that the justice system must be proactive and unyielding in the face of such violent crimes while also addressing root causes like poverty and unresolved trauma.
AR called for a justice system that is both firm and proactive in responding to violent crimes while urging authorities to tackle root causes such as poverty, trauma, and the lack of mental health care and youth support structures.
The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) also expressed outrage, with its Erongo regional coordinator Rodger Nautoro calling for a thorough investigation and a fair legal process.
“While investigations are ongoing, it has been alleged that this horrific incident may be linked to domestic violence. If that is confirmed, it would be a sobering reminder of the urgent need to confront and eliminate all forms of gender-based violence and domestic abuse in our society,” he said.
The United Democratic Front (UDF), through its secretary general Daniel Tsaneb, conveyed condolences to the family, calling the loss immeasurable.
“The lives of these children, filled with promise and hope, have been tragically cut short. We, as a nation, stand in solemn solidarity with the bereaved family,” he said.
He urged the nation to reflect on the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society and called for collective action to prevent future tragedies.
“Let us come together, not only in mourning but in action, ensuring that no family should ever have to endure such a senseless tragedy again,” he said.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare and Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi visited the grieving family in Usakos on Monday to offer their condolences.
