The Hardap Regional Police crime investigation coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Eric Clay, says the police are waiting for Aranos council officials to return from sports games in Gobabis to interrogate them about the 20 litres of diesel that were stolen from a standstill truck at the Aranos Town Council workshop last week.
Commissioner Clay said that investigations are proceeding well in the matter, but no arrests have been made so far and they are still gathering information.
“No arrests have been made at this point, but we are aware that the Aranos council is attending local authorities’ sports in Gobabis, in the Omaheke region, and we are now waiting for them to return. And once they do, we will interrogate every one of them because they are prime suspects in the missing diesel,” he said.
The interim chairperson of the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) in the Hardap region and social activist, David Kharuchab, also demands answers about the missing diesel at the workshop.
This is not the first time this has happened; in October 2017, the town’s former chief executive officer, Willem /Uirab, was the subject of a case of fuel theft.
Kharuchab is also accusing the council of awarding a tender to council employees while they were working for the council, among other things.
Aranos Town Council acting chief executive officer Gabriel Shinyemba also confirmed on Sunday that diesel went missing from the workshop last week, prompting him to lodge a case with the police.
When questioned about whether the truck belongs to the council or not, the CEO said the matter is with the police, and they are awaiting the outcome of the investigations.
