The police in the Erongo Region called upon the public to assist in identifying a woman who died suddenly on Friday at Independence Beach in Walvis Bay.

Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba, the head of the community affairs division of the Namibian Police in the Erongo Region, extended the request after the woman’s body was discovered at about 18:30 at the public facilities at the beach.

According to Shapumba, the unidentified woman was observed walking to the beach and sitting alone on a bench for a while.

“She later went closer to the water at the shore, came back and went into the public toilets. After a while, she came out and collapsed to the ground,” he said.

He added that the security guards who were on duty at the beach observed the woman’s actions from a distance.

When she collapsed, the security guards reported the incident to the police and notified medical staff at Walvis Bay Hospital.

According to Shapumba, the unconscious woman was taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival by medical staff on duty.

“It is suspected that the now deceased person ingested some form of insecticide,” he said.

He added that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the actual cause of the woman’s death.

Shapumba indicated that the woman was wearing a furry white jersey with a blue jeans jacket underneath, a peach-coloured blouse and trousers, as well as a pair of black Adidas sports shoes, at the time of her death.

Any person with information about the woman’s identity is requested to contact Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu on 0812464757 or Detective Inspector Mansie Amamub on 0817248668.

Alternatively, such information can be provided at the nearest police station.
