Multichoice Namibia has cautioned against piracy saying that it negatively affects local industry content, consequently weakening the local economic growth.

Multichoice Namibia Managing Director Roger Gertze, said piracy has a detrimental impact on all facets of society; from the economy to the growth of the local industry.

“It’s imperative that we look at the bigger picture when identifying the streams required for us to partner against piracy, and that is the impact that piracy has on stunting the growth of our local creative industry,” said Gertze.

He believes that the pursuit of the fight against piracy has the potential to change the direction of where the industry is heading, especially given the journey MultiChoice Namibia has embarked upon to invest even more in Namibian content.

Hence, his call on the public to report any piracy activities while asserting that the company remains committed to safeguarding the industry against piracy.

Meanwhile, Edward Mnisi, the Southern Africa Piracy Manager of Irdeto, talked about growing trends observed across the continent, underscoring what the industry and the public at large need to know about piracy and its dangers, including but not limited to the reality that cross-border piracy is a growing problem in Namibia.

Explained that apart from having sessions, more still needs to be done while calling on for robust measures to ensure the safety of local content in the industry since they are the most vulnerable compared to the international content industry.

“For us as a business, we hope that sessions like these will strengthen our united fight against content piracy in Namibia and an opportunity for us to work closely with like-minded institutions to ensure that our local content no longer has to face the obstacles it currently faces to the benefit of all,” said Mnisi.
