National Assembly secretary, Lydia Kandetu has extended an invitation to social justice activist Michael Amushelelo to attend a meeting with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs to discuss a petition demanding the creation of the Unemployment Fund.
On Monday, Kandetu wrote to Amushelelo to inform him that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs had taken his petition into consideration during its meeting on 13 June.
The committee decided to invite him to a consultative meeting to learn more.
According to Kandetu, the meeting, which is scheduled for 20 June at the Parliament Building, wishes to clarify the requirements and expectations of the petition through a 5-10-minute presentation to the committee.
In his response, Amushelelo stated that he is pushing for the creation of an Unemployment Fund, similar to the Veterans Act No. 2 of 2008, which would give money to unemployed Namibians monthly.
“Every unemployed Namibian should be given money on a monthly basis; this is your constitutional right as per Article 95 of the Namibian Constitution. We will continue to advocate for all Namibians, especially those who are economically subjugated. Members of the public are hereby invited to come and watch as we advocate for the unemployed,” said Amushelelo.
In 2023, Amushelelo led a protest against high unemployment in Windhoek, which led to his arrest alongside Member of Parliament Inna Hengari and another social activist, Dimbulukweni Nauyoma.
