Residents of Okahandja can again breathe a sigh of relief as the town’s water supply has been fully restored following a five-day interruption caused by the main bulk water supply pipeline that burst due to pressure from heavy rainfall on 20 March.
The Municipality of Okahandja announced the restoration on social media, urging residents to allow time for the system to stabilise and to use water responsibly.
The pipe burst, which occurred after heavy rains damaged the town’s main water supply line, led to school closures and disrupted businesses and essential services.
In a statement, the municipality expressed gratitude for the community’s patience during the challenging period:
“We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by the residents of Okahandja during this challenging period.”
To prevent future disruptions, the municipality has committed to continuous monitoring of the water supply system.
Residents experiencing any further issues were encouraged to report them for immediate assistance.
“Should any residents experience issues with their water supply, they are encouraged to report them to the municipality for immediate assistance,” the announcement stated.
The water supply challenges in Okahandja have again cast a spotlight on the town’s ongoing challenges with infrastructure maintenance.
Residents have previously voiced frustrations over frequent water interruptions affecting daily life and local businesses.
The municipality’s commitment to monitoring and addressing these issues is seen as a step towards more reliable service delivery in the future.
In a related development, NamWater has restored water supply to Ondangwa, Oniipa, Omuthiya, and surrounding constituencies.
NamWater’s spokesperson, Lot Ndamanomhata, confirmed that the supply was reinstated following the successful repair of a pipeline break on the Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime line.
“Our maintenance team worked diligently to resolve the issue promptly after the breakage occurred on Tuesday,” he said.
Ndamanomhata also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and thanked affected customers for their cooperation during the repair period.
