OBSERVER COASTAL | Road repair projects gain momentum in Walvis Bay

The Municipality of Walvis Bay has confirmed that several major road maintenance and rehabilitation projects are currently in full swing across the town, signaling a push to upgrade the coastal town’s transport infrastructure.

The active programme, which includes an immediate pothole repair drive and long-term surface rehabilitation, is being rolled out in phases as the local authority continues to invest heavily in the upkeep of its road network.

The municipality said residents will have noticed increased activity by contractor DJJ Investment CC, which has been appointed to carry out a comprehensive pothole repair and routine road maintenance campaign.

Works are currently active in several key arteries, including Namib Street, 6th Road, Nangolo Mbumba Drive, and Sam Nujoma Avenue.

The contractor’s teams are moving through these areas to address immediate hazards and smooth out the surface for daily commuters.

In a parallel effort, Westwing JV Area 7 Engineering has commenced a more extensive road rehabilitation project on Kabeljou Street.

This work, the municipality says, forms part of a broader maintenance contract designed not merely to patch problems, but to significantly extend the lifespan of the existing pavement.

The scope of work on this contract, the council confirmed, is wide-ranging and includes critical treatments such as pothole patching, slurry sealing, crack sealing, and comprehensive surface preparation, along with other bituminous treatments.

The contractor’s schedule also earmarks several major routes for attention, including Kruis Street, Esplanade Street, Main Road, the Esplanade Walkway, 7th and 8th Streets, as well as the section of 9th Road situated between Union Street and Sam Nujoma Avenue.

Municipal officials have noted that the final sequence for these works will be determined based on the actual condition of the roads as assessed on the ground and operational requirements, allowing for a flexible response to priority areas.

Looking further ahead, the municipality is also progressing with large-scale structural projects that promise to reshape parts of the town.

The design phase for the reconstruction of New Western Road, the vital thoroughfare leading to Independence Beach, has officially been completed.

According to municipal sources, construction is expected to commence as soon as the necessary procurement processes are finalized.

Similarly, reconstruction works on Nathanael Maxuilili Street are also on the horizon and are expected to begin shortly, adding to the list of transformative projects in the area.

In the industrial precinct, roadwork is also underway through the established Memorandum of Understanding between the Municipality of Walvis Bay, the Roads Authority, and the Road Fund Administration.

These collaborative efforts are progressing steadily, with the municipality promising a more detailed update for residents and businesses in the industrial zone in due course.

In an official statement, the municipality acknowledged the concerns raised by residents regarding the condition of certain roads, emphasizing that while significant progress is being made, the sheer scale of the work necessitates a phased approach.

Repairs are being carried out based on a strict order of priority, available resources, and the operational schedules of the appointed contractors the municipality confirmed.

The local authority extended its gratitude to residents for their continued patience and cooperation, noting that the current disruptions are a necessary step toward a safer, more durable road network for Walvis Bay.
