Works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi has officially handed over a N$132 million road rehabilitation project aimed at fixing six deteriorating roads, covering roughly eight kilometres across Walvis Bay.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Roads Authority (RA), the Road Fund Administration (RFA), and the Walvis Bay Municipality, with Unik Construction appointed as the main contractor.
The upgrade will focus on 5th Street East, 6th Street East, Hidipo Hamutenya Road, Kovambo Nujoma Drive, 5th Road, and Grand Avenue.
At the groundbreaking and site handover ceremony, Nekundi called for stronger accountability on government projects, stressing that leadership should ultimately be judged by tangible outcomes for communities.
He urged all parties involved to make sure the roads are finished on schedule, within budget, and up to required quality standards – with a firm eye on value for money.
Nekundi also warned Unik Construction that the N$132 million project must be delivered within the agreed timeline, without cutting corners on quality or long-term durability.
He further emphasized the need to treat workers fairly and responsibly, cautioning contractors against any mistreatment of employees on government-funded road works.
The project is set to bring much-needed relief to motorists and local residents who have been dealing with deteriorating road conditions, while also strengthening infrastructure in one of Namibia’s key commercial and logistics hubs.
Erongo regional Governor Nathalia /Goagoses joined Nekundi, along with leadership from the Roads Authority and Road Fund Administration, for the site handover and launch of the Lot 4 rehabilitation project.
/Goagoses underlined the importance of quality road infrastructure for moving people and goods, improving road safety, and boosting economic activity – especially as Walvis Bay continues to grow as a major port and logistics gateway.
She noted that the rehabilitation is expected to enhance connectivity, improve road safety, support local businesses and trade, create jobs, and contribute to a better quality of life for residents and road users.
The governor welcomed the project’s start and called for continued cooperation between government, the municipality, the contractor, and the community to ensure successful delivery and ongoing maintenance of the infrastructure.
This project marks a major investment in Walvis Bay’s road network and is expected to underpin the town’s continued economic growth, while making daily travel safer and smoother for motorists, businesses, and residents alike.
