NSX’s market capitalization grew to N$46.4 billion

The Namibia Stock Exchange (NSX) had 12 primary listed companies as at 31 December 2024. The local market capitalisation, representing the total value of locally listed stocks, grew by 1.8% quarter-on-quarter and by 5.2% year-on-year to N$46.4 billion. 

The Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority, said in the 2024 Fourth Quarter report that on a quarter-on-quarter basis, the local index rose by 1.3%, and by 2.9% year-on-year to 691 index points as at 31 December 2024.

The value of securities traded declined by 93.1% quarter-on-quarter, and by 155.9% year-on year to N$123.9 million as at 31 December 2024.

As at 31 December 2024, the main board market capitalisation fell by 4.6% quarter-on-quarter and rose by 10.7% year-on-year to N$2.4 trillion. 

The NSX overall index closed at 1,801 index points at the end of December 2024, losing 5.1% quarter-on-quarter, and 10.3% on a year-on-year basis.

The NSX Overall Index, which includes both local and foreign listings, closed at 1,801 index points during the quarter, reflecting a decrease of 5.1% quarter-on-quarter, while the NSX Local Index, which tracks only Namibian companies, gained 1.3% during the same period. Year on year, the Overall Index outperformed the NSX Local Index, delivering a strong return of 10.3 percent compared to the Local Index’s 2.9% decrease. 

The report said strong performance of the Overall Index suggests a favourable market sentiment and increased investor interest. 

All sectors experienced declines during the quarter, led by the Financials sector, specifically Trustco Ltd with a 23.1% decline, Old Mutual Ltd down 8.7% while FirstRand Ltd and Standard Bank Group fell 8.5% respectively, by Consumer Discretionary and Basic Metals sectors. 

The Namfisa report said the Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFI) sector demonstrated strong growth and resilience as of 31 December 2024. The sector’s total assets expanded by 2.9% quarter-on-quarter and 14.3% year-on year, reaching N$474.1 billion as at end December 2024. 

“This growth was supported by economic stabilisation and positive financial market momentum. Sector size in terms of number of active players the NBFI reported a total of 1027 entities and 14 701 intermediaries as at 31 December 2024,” the report said.
