Originally scheduled for last Wednesday, the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) has postponed the release of its long-awaited disability report citing an ongoing extensive review process.
This is the second time in recent months that the agency has delayed a major report, raising concerns about its ability to meet deadlines and the impact on timely data availability for the public.
On Monday, Iipumbu Sakaria, spokesperson for NSA, said the delay is part of a rigorous quality assurance process aimed at ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data.
“All thematic reports are going through an extensive review to ensure the quality of the data,” Sakaria explained.
Sakaria assured that the revised report will provide a comprehensive and accurate analysis, supporting better decision-making and more effective policy development.
He maintained that the delays were necessary to ensure data integrity, and he reassured the public that the NSA remains committed to releasing reports on time in the future.
“Since our inception, reports have always been released on time. This will continue going forward,” he said.
The delay has drawn criticism from stakeholders, who stress the importance of the disability report in shaping national policies and programs for people with disabilities.
Youth leader Duminga Ndala from the Landless People’s Movement described the delay as unacceptable, emphasising that the report is vital for improving accessibility, healthcare, employment opportunities, and social services.
“I find it unacceptable that the NSA continues to postpone the release of crucial information that directly impacts the country’s policies and development,” she said.
Alex !Xaroeb, a resident of Katutura who lives with a disability, also expressed frustration, noting that such delays can lead to a loss of hope among those affected.
“I cannot blame them, but I have the right to know what information is in the report on time, the same way they have the authority to shift the dates,” he insisted.
He urged the NSA to prioritise timeliness when releasing reports.
The disability report is considered a crucial resource for understanding the challenges faced by people with disabilities in the country and for informing policy decisions.
