Walvis Bay residents and holidaymakers have expressed growing concerns over the neglect of Independence Beach, particularly the unusable toilets, which they say pose an environmental hazard.

Simon Paulus, a resident, voiced his frustration, urging the Walvis Bay Municipality to take immediate action.

“The existing toilets are extremely dirty and now completely unused. This was supposed to be one of the best leisure spots, but it’s disgusting to use the facilities here. We’ve even had to drive to Swakopmund to find cleaner options,” Paulus said.

Paulus pointed out that Independence Beach is becoming a hotspot for criminal activity.

“For safety reasons, there should be security guards and cameras to monitor the area and prevent crimes,” he added.

Fenny Shoonga, who visited the beach last December, also shared her concerns, emphasising the need for consistent cleanliness at the beach.

“The only way to ensure the place stays clean is by deploying cleaners to clean it every day,” she suggested.

Walvis Bay’s mayor, Trevino Forbes, outlined the municipality’s plans to develop a multifunctional beach promenade at Independence Beach.

“The development will include the renovation of existing infrastructure, including the toilets,” Forbes said, confirming that the municipality intends to address the sanitation issues raised by residents and visitors.

He added that the new infrastructure will feature a guardroom, an amphitheater, open-air gym equipment, play park equipment, and a 1.3km walkway with multiple lanes to enhance the beach’s appeal for both locals and tourists.

Forbes confirmed that a bid for the development would soon be advertised, and a qualified contractor would be appointed to carry out the work.

The municipality had initially planned to close the beach for maintenance in October last year but reversed the decision following public backlash.

The new development plan reflects the municipality’s commitment to addressing community concerns and improving Independence Beach.
