As part of a regional school outreach effort, the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) this week visited several schools in the Oshikoto and Ohangwena regions, introducing learners to the various career paths available within the military.
The visits form part of the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs’ participation in a broader series of career fairs aimed at inspiring young people to consider defence service roles.
Schools visited included Onankali South Combined School, Oshilungi Combined School, and Odjadjaxwi Combined School.
At Onankali South, Principal Ruusa Simson welcomed the initiative, saying the decision to host a career fair on the school grounds was a deliberate one.
“We usually see the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs at regional career fairs, and we are thankful for the trouble these soldiers go through to spend time with the children,” she said.
Simson added that many learners from her school do not have the means to travel to larger events, making localised fairs all the more vital.
“Hosting a smaller event at the school itself provides the opportunity for learners from all levels and ages to see first-hand what can be achieved, not just in the NDF but in other industries as well,” she said.
Among the learners inspired by the exhibition was Grade 9 student Lucia Shapange, who shared her aspiration to one day become a military doctor.
“I would like to help people if they get injured or sick. Helping my fellow soldiers one day would be very rewarding for me,” she said.
The NDF team is expected to continue its engagement across the various regions of Namibia, with team leaders encouraging youth to explore the service’s contribution to national development.
“Do not miss out on discovering how the NDF contributes to national service and how you can be a part of it,” one of the team members said.
In a related development, the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs announced that shortlisted applicants for positions such as recruit soldiers, drivers, pilots, and aircraft technicians will soon be published in state-owned media.
The ministry advised all young applicants, including those from the National Youth Service, to remain alert for further updates.
